Christian Domionism And Bad History (Part 3)

When a un-Biblical Idea Enters The Picture And Results in Distorted History

More Conspiracy Theories
As stated, a person's only metric of validation in sharing a post on Facebook is that is simply conforms to there worldview. Often, there is no effort to check the source where the claim originated. Most don't consider whether the source in question has a agenda or a very strong bias. Many will take such claims at face-value and present them as fact. Conspiracy theories were already rampant even before the Covid-19 outbreak, but have exploded since. A huge chunk of these center around Bill and Melinda Gates.

Back in the 90's and early 2000's, I did not have a positive opinion of Bill Gates at all. Microsoft was abusing and manipulating its marketplace position and engaging in anti-competitive practices that were anti-consumer. Many of these practices were documented by the DOJ in there show-down with Microsoft in the late 90's/early 2000's.

Through the philanthropy work done by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Bill Gates has largely redeemed himself though. What's baffling though is when people get angry about Bill Gates, it wasn't about his documented corporate shenanigans back in the day, but this absurd conspiracy crap that has no merit whatsoever.

This is where logical thinking is murdered in cold blood. When people form opinions, it's usually not from fact, but absurd click-bait. A Florida Pastor, Rodney Howard-Browne, publicly told his congregation that the Covid-19 vaccine being developed is intended to kill millions as a population control scheme. This falls within the conspiracy theories promoted by Rosanne Barr that Covid-19 was specifically engineered to kill boomers.

Another claim circulated is that the vaccine is going to have a microchip in it to tract people. This claim has been debunked. However, its embraced by many who are invested in Revelation. While people are entitled to there interpretation of Revelation, at the end of the day, and interpretation is just exactly that: an interpretation. Also, people tend to mold the book into there own vision as many individuals often incorporate there own pariahs and views on social commentary into there interpretation. Hence, while a claim will be debunked, it will still ring true with many as it conforms to what there particular interpretation of Revelation is, regardless of what the facts say. However, many of those who are paranoid about microchips sure don't seem that concern about there smartphones that travel everywhere with them while impulsively sharing everything about themselves on that toxic wasteland that is Facebook.

There is yet another false claim that Melinda Gates is an Satanist. The "proof" (if one can call it that) that Melinda Gates is a Satanist came from a low-res photo of her wearing a cross that one can't tell is upside down or exact in symmetry.

For those who actually made the effort to fact-check this claim (thank you Snopes!), one would have known that Melinda Gates is a practicing Catholic. In Catholicism, a upside cross is used to symbolize the Crucifixion of St. Peter. For those not familiar, when Peter, one of Jesus's apostles, was crucified, he request to be crucified upside down because he wasn't worthy of being crucified upright like Jesus. Thus, the upside cross was used to symbolism this crucifixion. Thus, even if the cross was upside down cross, there still wouldn't have been controversy. The upside cross would have been a symbol of Melinda Gates's Catholic beliefs. This is also something that anyone researching the topic would have realized if they bothered to take 10 minutes of there time to fact-check the claim. There is shear ignorance by those who have little understanding of there own religion or beliefs, but act like they know it like the back of there own hand. If provided a choice between taking the time to check facts or impulsively share the claim on Facebook like the pathetic attention seeker that many are; several would opt for the latter.

What's sad isn't that these claims exist. What's sad and pathetic is that many people I know eat this crap up and share it with others on impulse on Facebook without question. Many gullible individuals, incapable of exercising there critical thinking skills; will believe these claims at face-value. People are really smart. However, many have a very naïve outlook that results in many of them falling for the stupidest crap. Several will believe anything they read on the Internet as the gospel truth without validity. Anyone who took 5 minutes to read the damn Snopes and Wikipedia articles about these topic would have realized instantly how bogus this claim is. Is five-ten minutes of fact-check too much to ask? I mean if one had the time to read an article, form an opinion on it, and share it; they had the time to fact-check it.

The Conspiracy Gospel

Several months back, I did a message about the Conspiracy Gospel. On the surface, it looks as if the Conspiracy Gospel is basically a clone of the Gospel of Fear, as both use fear as an instrument of outreach. The main difference is that the Gospel of Fear builds its case through self-reference, while the Conspiracy Gospel caters through the fears of anxieties of (American Evangelical) Christians using conspiracy theories, sensationalist click-bait, and modern, contemporary rhetoric. The Conspiracy Gospel is often used to hint unfounded media conspiracies, claiming of a cover-up by men in fancy suits in there dark, underground lair. They reference Christian suffering not through valid sources that can be cited, but through accounts and claims that either exaggerated, taken out of context, or in many cases, fabricated altogether. Spiritual exploitation of the gullible is the norm.

These misleading stories get picked up by websites that report them as the gospel truth. Those visiting the sites will automatically take the article at face-value. "Surely, a site that has the word 'Christian' in the title won't lie to me!", as the story is shared on Facebook impulsively without question. No check was done to see if the article was valid.

For some reason, Obama came to mind when doing this section. For many Christians, he became there boogeymen. Mass hysteria became the name of the game. There are enough legitimate reasons to criticize Obama. However, most (who I knew anyway) didn't form opinions based on complaints of actual merit, but fear and paranoia that wasn't based on reality. When one gets there news from conspiracy mills like InfoWars and the Philadelphia Trumpet, what does one expect! One doesn't form opinions from actual facts, but absurd drivel intended to spark charged emotions.  Utter nonsense such as Obama's death panels, FEMA Concentration Camps, Obama setting out to destroy the white race and 8 years of "He's the anti-Christ" getting ready to establish the New World Order. Such nonsense became the gospel truth for millions the world over. The conspiracy gospel presented Obama as Satan. The irony is that the same gospel presents Trump (an a-moral buffoon) as the second coming despite him wearing his moral and ethical shortcomings as a badge of honor.

Despite Obama being a practicing Christian, there was mass hysteria about his religious beliefs. People felt that he was was going to take away people's gun or implement Islamic Sharia law. When these things never occurred, people chanted "Thank God" as some miracle had been delivered. However, "Thanking God" for Obama not committing genocide is like thanking God that Godzilla didn't attack Tokyo. Sure, one could be thankful that I giant mutant lizard didn't way waste to one of the largest urban centers of the world, but wouldn't that thanks been much more appropriate of something of actual merit. These claims didn't come true because their was massive opposition, but because such utter non-sense was never in the cards in the first place to begin with. Unless one is a sucker for conspiracy theories. This is the person that see's tin-foil hats as something more than a fashion statement. A person's beliefs become discredited then they based there dislike not on thing of actual merit, but irrational and nonsensical garbage.  That person becomes an incoherent crackpot.

Revelation

Currently, there is a intense fascination (obsession would be a more appropriate word) with prophecy and Revelation. This usually occurs when times are bad or people are going through there own trials and tribulations. Often, for those going through hard times or those feeling disappointed that things aren't going there way, Revelation becomes a very appealing book. Thus, Revelation becomes the "go-to" book for those wanting to validate there suffering. Revelation can be interpreted in any number of ways because of its open-ended format due to its imaginative and figurative language. One can mold Revelation to fit there worldview.

Revelation's opened-ended nature is also its drawback. Because Revelation can be molded into anything that the reader wants it to be, several will often inject their own social commentary into it. Any personal pariah can be assigned. If the end times is set in motion because of "evil liberals", then it's now true for the one reading the book. If Napoleon or Hitler are the Anti-Christ, then they are now the Anti-Christ to that reader. If the Anti-Christ is a future kid hiding somewhere in Syria, then its now true all of a sudden. If the end times was set in motion due to a recent virus outbreak, then it's now true to that reader.

If one wanted to incorporate conspiracy theories, then conspiracy theories become part of that book. Rodney-Howard Browne demonstrated this by telling his congregation that Covid-19 was bio-engineered and that the vaccination is designed to kill millions as part of a population control scheme. When people use conspiracy theories to validate there interpretations, those ideas are no longer conspiracy theories to them. Offense is taken when the idea is referred to as a conspiracy theory. One time, a acquaintance was telling me that the wheels of the quote "End Times" would be set into motion when Pope Francis became the next pope for reasons. After he told me, I made the accidental slip by stating that this was a interesting conspiracy theory. He then immediately shot back, "This isn't a conspiracy theory!". This is the attitude that many embrace.

I know several people personally who are personally obsessed with prophecy. While it is a interesting topic, its obsession can become very unhealthy and serve as a very massive distraction. It's alright if people have their own personal interpretations of Revelation. However, at the end of the day, we need to remember that personal interpretations are just exactly that: personal interpretations. They are not validated fact. However, for many, there personal interpretations do become "fact". Conspiracy theories become the gospel truth as they are used to validate that particular interpretation, regardless of how outlandish the claims are. They become true simply becomes it conforms to the individual's personal views.

One of the things that I've always pondered was that despite history being relative when it comes to the occurrence of horrific events, the "End Times" (I don't think that phrase was even used in the Bible) was a recent occurrence. Within Catholicism and Lutheranism, the "End-times" started when Jesus ascended into heaven, as the church was seen as the last solution before God's Kingdom on Earth. However, especially among those who grew up Baptist, the End Times was a recent development. It wasn't the Holocaust, Bubonic plague, Napoleon or Hitler that brought it one, but some recent mundane development, like a presidential election. Apparently, things were peachy back then and didn't explode until those pesky Democrats and Obama entered the scene! God must be very much into partisan politics (I have a strong disdain to the Democrat Party. However I base my opinions on rational complaints, and not absurd drivel like conspiracy theories).

Many of times, those who have a obsession with Revelation and the end times often form their opinions not on things that are based on the Bible, but pop-culture. Often,  televangelist like Pat Robertson and John Hagee often present there interpretation as if it's validated fact. Televangelist typically add a bunch of their own crap and present it as the gospel truth. For a book like Revelation, which could be interpreted in any number of ways, presenting a personal take as if its the gospel truth serves as a tool for manipulation.

Question, How can you validate future events?
Answer, You can't. Something can't be validated until it happens.

As I've said before, people are entitled to their interpretations. However, these interpretations are usually based on pop culture or sensationalist drivel found on Facebook, and those making these quote "predictions" are often incorporating their own personal takes on social commentary, which is usually based on stereotypes, prejudices, and biases. At the end of the day, personal interpretations are just exactly that, personal interpretations, and not validated fact.
Persecution And Upholding the Rights Of Others

Religious persecution is a real thing. It happens to everyone, regardless of religious persecution. As such, in that regard, we are all in the same boat. This is again the reason why we highlight the suffering of others as well as ourselves. It can happen to anyone, and whatever abuses happen need to be highlighted. It can happen to anyone. These persecutions have been highlighted various times. The suffering of Christians by the hands of ISIS in the Middle East or other extremist groups have been highlighted by various media outlets the world over. (despite many who are quick to insinuate a media conspiracy because they ran across some bogus claim on Breitbart and now think that a media cover-up of Christian suffering is a real thing)

In our country, democracy only works when we uphold the rights of others as well. The Golden Rule applies here too. If we are dismissive of the rights of others, than other people will become dismissive of our rights. If Christians are dismissive of the rights of those who aren’t Christians, then why should the non-Christians become concern for our rights? Democracy works when we uphold the rights of others, and vice-versa.

WallBuilders Recap
Wallbuilders is an distortion of history. Yes, most of our Founding Fathers were devout Christians. this is historical fact. Our country was also fundamentally shaped by the ideas of the French and English Enlightenment. This is also historical fact. There is historical documentation galore that supports this. Several of the Founding Fathers incorporated many of the ideas of the English and French Enlightenment into there Christian beliefs as well. For many of the Founding Fathers, humanism became a part of there Christian beliefs. For Founding Fathers like Jefferson, Deism was just as much an aspect to his beliefs as Christianity was.

The Christian beliefs of these Found Fathers are very different from what modern American Evangelical Christians are now. Modern American Evangelical Christianity is a product of Jerry Fawell and his brand of politicized Christianity that gained prominence starting in the late 70's. Given the 180-200 year difference between Fawell's brand of Christianity and the beliefs held by the Founding Father's it would be naive to think that the Christian school of thought would remain static over that time. Even within Christianity, interpretations gain and loose traction all the time. In 2000 years, we went through Catholicism, Orthodox Christianity, the rise of Protestant beliefs and Lutheranism, Methodist, Anglican, and Baptist denominations and everything else in between. Within American Christianity, one could see the split of demonstrations that was a result of the Civil War. Within Christianity, there are many different schools of thought.

As a result, painting the Founding Fathers as clones of modern American Evangelical Christians is one of the most inaccurate portrayals in history. The Founding Fathers did not set out to create a Christian Theocracy. In fact, quite the opposite. They saw how destructive theocracies and state religions are. Who could blame there disgust either. Theocracies are a very bad thing, regardless of the religion. It's a distortion of Christian beliefs for the purpose of state control. Christianity was never intended as being a political movement. As a spirituality movement for Salvation and spirituality, the very idea of a Christian country is a massive contradiction to Christianity.

The Founding Fathers were making a country for Christians, but not just Christians alone. They were making a civic, secular republic for anyone who embraced freedom, regardless of political and religious affiliation.

Wallbuilders is essentially "revising" history to recast the founding Fathers as Christian Fundamentalist who were out to create that theocracy.

Anything that promotes the idea of the Founding Fathers creating a Christian Theocracy is just bad history. They wrote out the ideas of the English and French Enlightenment that were instrumental in the founding of this country. Regardless of whether people embrace or reject such ideas, there were the foundation of our country. One can't simply write them out because they don't like them, and this is what WallBuilders has done.

The reason why a organization like WallBuilders is able to flourish is that many are ignorant of history. Many want there own rose-tinted version of history, and WallBuilders provides it. Instead of looking at history objectively, many will romanticize and glorify it. Often several confuse idealism and history as one and the same. Those who see things through rose-tinted glasses see that perfect utopia that never existed except in there minds. History though is often times much uglier and a lot less glamorous than what's presented by some. It's not clear cut as many make it out to be. A romanticized and glorified history often lacks historical context in pursuit of drama and ideals. Ideals are important However ideals can't be reached until the inner demons inflicting us are challenged. Ideals also can't be reached unless there is a historical basis behind them.

Conclusion

Often, when people encounter information that they feel conflicted with, they feel challenged. Several don't want to here that this country was founded on secular, civic ideals. When conflicted, several start to think that the world out to get them and resort to conspiracy theories to validate there beliefs. They will believe in the conspiracies of how the schools are hiding the "real" facts. They will buy into the media conspiracies that are hiding certain information. Several will claim that they need to take back rights that were never taken away in the first place (thus there is nothing to take back). I've mentioned this in part two, there has been no rights that have been taken away from Christians in this country (especially during the outbreak). Many, caving into fear and paranoia, are presenting this personal worldview as validated fact. Many Evangelical Christians become slaves to conspiracy theory and sensationalist click-bait. As such, they have become there own worst enemy. Satan is real, and he's called ignorance.

I'm not opposed to social and political commentary into a sermon as long as its well research, comes from a valid source, and there isn't a angle or slant to it. However, this is often ignored when one grabs the first thing they encounter on Breitbart, CBN, Facebook, The Philadelphia Trumpet, and the various sites that inject "Christian" into there name on impulse without research.

These sources and others don't serve facts, but charged emotions. People can't think in a rational or coherent manner when in a emotional state. Yet, unwilling to question the questionable sources, several will have the audacity to incorporate this tripe into a sermon and proceed to pass it off as "validated fact" and "Biblical Teaching". It's one thing to be entitled to your opinions. It's another to present them as Biblical teaching.

Those visiting the source in question won't fact-check there claim. They will automatically assume that if the site in question has the words "Liberty", "Freedom", or "Christian" in there name, then the source won't lie to them. At the same token, those operating the sites in question know this too. This is why they can make the most absurd and sensationalist claims and get away with it too. They know that there viewers will embrace whatever they publish at face-value on impulse. In short, the publishers know that there viewers are gullible saps.

We should love our country. We should be proud of it. At the same time, our country isn't perfect, and do you know what, there's nothing wrong with saying that. Reality isn't perfect. It's good to have ideals that we can strive for to make us better. At the same time, we must realize that there never was a time in our country's history were things were perfect. From the original sin of slavery to the Trail of Tears, the Civil War, segregation, economic depression, two World Wars, and social changes, only one looking at rose-tinted glasses and say that quote "things were better back then". They weren't, and we shouldn't lie to ourselves. Even though the noble pursuit was there, our country was never the utopia that those wearing those rose-tinted glasses see. However, despite our problems and issues, we can strive for better.

Christians do have a responsibility. However, that responsibility becomes tainted when we try to peruse it at any cost, and that includes pushing bad history and a false narrative as the gospel truth. We have to remain truthful. That includes just as much ourselves as with others. When we lie to ourselves, we become our own worst enemy. The villain isn’t secularism or Radical Islam, but the reflection in the mirror looking back as our personal fears and paranoia become real.

People are entitled to there opinions. However, there not entitled to there own facts. People are entitled to there views on social and political commentary. However, there has to be consideration taken before incorporating such commentary in before presenting it as factual information. Otherwise, one could be presenting false claims as the gospel truth. Opinions only hold weight when they're supported by facts, not rhetoric. And whatever you do, don't embrace the "Lost Cause". The last thing we need is more pseudo-history.
