Thoughts And Opinions On : Coronavirus Part 4

It's Time To Talk About The States!

Since the outbreak started, the lion's share of the work would be done by those in the field as medical workers on the front-lines risks there lives to combat this virus. They are the largely nameless heroes doing the heavy lifting. Heavy lifting that they should receive a world of praise for. If there's anybody that needs the prayers, its the doctors, nurses, researchers and other medical professionals on the front-lines that are the ones sacrificing there lives to protect you from the deadly virus. We need to remember those doing the real work in the fight against Covid-19.

Who is responsible for the smaller, day-to-day details on the handling of the outbreak. If one ask Trump, he would provide a very simple answer.

On April 13th, Trump wrote on Twitter that he had "total" authority when it came to the handling of Covid-19. He stated that the decision to allow commerce was up to the president, and not the state governors. Now, Trump would grant the "privilege" of letting the state governors in on the decision-making process. Not surprisingly, a statement like this caused outrage. Outrage that, in my opinion, is rightfully deserved for a number of reasons.

The Constitution was in itself written as a declaration against authoritative rule, and though the Constitution provided a much stronger framework for a federal government compared to the Articles of Confederation that came before it, it was still written with the mindset that a authoritative government operated by leaders wanting total power is very bad thing (actual total authority, not one claiming oppression due to encountering a difference of opinion). Trump received a lot of backlash from both sides of the political aisles from his remarks.

One quickly forgets that being a president and king are two different things. The 10th Amendment of the Constitution states that the powers not belonging to the federal government belong to the states. Since the  states are largely responsibly for the administration of law and order, health, and taxes; these aspects would fall under there jurisdiction. Trump would be overriding the authority spelled out in the Constitution and acting on his own accord. What this also means is that while one would be tempted on blaming Trump for everything under the sun, such a action can't occur. Trump can only receive blame for things within his official capacity as president, nothing more. The vast majority of the day-to-day handling of the Coronavirus is going to fall on the state governments.

When People Flip-Flop On States Rights
One can make some very interesting observations. When it comes to the subject of state's rights, many constantly flip-flop on the topic. Many will scream about states rights at the top of there lung. It's a real thing that is worth acknowledging and upholding. At the same time, there are people (and often the same people) who condone Trump's remark of total authority over the states.

During the Obama years, Mike Pence constantly paraded states rights. Yet, when Trump made his remark; Pence agrees that Trump has total authority other the states. That's some deep commitment to states rights! When New York or California do there own thing, those that scream states rights will condemn those states for challenging Trump. It made me realize that many only care about states rights only when it benefits them or conforms to there political slants. Other than that, most could care less about it.

One has to remember is that states rights works both ways, and doesn't conform to a single political slant. New York, Illinois, and California are equally free to enforce there own social, medical, and environmental policies as Arizona, Florida, and Texas are free to pursue there own policies.

The Failure Of The State Governments
The decision to open up the commerce in this country is largely  determined by the states. The realm of public health and safety are largely the responsibility of the states. Many have made public health and and general safety a top priority during the health crisis. This had been the case of Ohio, Washington State, Maryland, and Michigan. Many state governors, including both Democrats and Republicans, have taken the health crisis seriously early on . These states took the initiative early on and passed the health regulations needed to protect the general populace of the states noted above. While people still unfortunately got sick and died, the number of deaths in these states have been lower compared to other.

While Trump does deserve a descent amount of the blame for his actions in regard to the outbreak. As mentioned in the last article, he is the one ultimately responsible for the general handling of the outbreak since he is the one leading the country. With that noted, the day to day micromanagement of the Covid-19 outbreak response is going to be handled by them. As such, when the proverbial crap hits the fan, this where the lion's share of the blame falls on though.

Andrew Cuomo slashed New York's medical and health budget right before the outbreak. The state's health-care system is very strained right now due to that budget decrease. This is a stark contrast to California where a state of emergency was declared within a day of the first Californian dying from Covid-19. California had a fraction of the deaths of Covid-19 compared to New York.

In many states with rural populations, many small hospitals have closed, forcing many people infected in the smaller towns to travel to the bigger cities for treatment. The virus is now rapidly spreading in rural areas. Oklahoma had been very lenient in its response to Covid-19, and many in that state are paying the price for it. Considering that Oklahoma is basically the Saudi Arabia of America when it comes to oil production, some would think that its health system would have a lot more resources (at least right before the collapse of worldwide oil prices). This is not the case as Oklahoma has one of the lowest-ranked health-care systems in the country.

One can make the safe assumption that the vast majority of Oklahoma's oil revenue has been going to that top one percent. This is the same state that craps on its teachers by paying them the lowest in the country despite there hard work while the oil executives are swimming in there millions upon millions. The teachers could easily be given raises for there hard work while the health-care system could easily have the resources that it needs. This wouldn't be a sacrifice for those already loaded with money. But it's more important for Timmy to gets his platinum-encrusted teeth caps this quarter than provide the funding for vital institutions that render a much better quality of life for society in general.

The shortcomings of the education and health-care system in Oklahoma is something that could easily be corrected  without sacrifice to either the executives of free enterprise, but won't because these executives have told both politicians and gullible voters alike that making corporations loaded with money to pay there share in taxes is evil Commie stuff (even though I can make the safe assumption that like Amazon, they probably don't pay taxes at all, or very little).**********

Florida's beaches have remained open during spring break. The governor, Ron Desantis, refused to close the beaches despite Coronavirus spreading rapidly, and there was a much greatly risk of infection by keeping them open. He responded that there were far more open spaces on his beaches than in the New York subways which were much more constricted. I bet Cuomo didn't like that remark. Despite the shortcomings mentioned about Cuomo earlier in this article, he has been very responsive since the outbreak was really taking off. He had already shut down New York's infrastructure by the time that Desantis made his inaccurate remark. Not only that, since the health crisis began, Cuomo had been far more responsive to the health and safety of the general public in his state than Desantis has in Florida.

Desantis claimed that local residents were enforcing social distancing policies on the beaches in question. When one looks at the pictures, it looks more like the Woodstock concert.

Rodney Howard-Browne defied health orders and continued to proceed with church services in the Tampa Bay area where he told his his congregation that Coronaivrus was a hoax, and later, man-made bio-engineered virus designed  to depopulate  the Earth as part of a population control scheme. Nothing showers God's love and praises more than outrageous conspiracy theories!

Despite health regulations being put in place to protect the public, many have been reluctant to enforce them, especially within the religious setting. In spite of digital means being implemented to fulfill people's spiritual needs without physical contact, Desantis have allowed physical meetings to take place during the health crisis, despite the much greater risk of exposure to the deadly virus. This is similar to Texas. Like Texas, the stay-at-home orders in Florida were determined by the individual counties.

As of April 16th, Florida is already reopening beaches despite the outbreak being in full force.

Now Lets Talk About Texas!
I haven't talked about Texas that much, but the state government in general had done a very lousy job of handling the Covid-19 crisis. As late as the start of April, when nationwide cases of Cornavirus has already surpassed 200,000, Greg Abbott hadn't issued a stay-at-home order. On April 1st, the state Democrats called on him to issue such an order, which didn't occur until a day after on the 2nd. However, confusion insured as he still refused to call it a "stay-at-home" order even though that what it was. Would anyone expect anything different from a man who viewed the El Paso shooting as a mental health issue instead of the racially motivated hate crime that it was.

Before the order was issued, the decision of enforcement was left up to the individual counties. Here in South Texas, the local county government have been very vigilant. They have largely been on top of things and there efforts need to be commended. However, this was the responsibility of the state and federal government, and not that of the local counties. They shouldn't had to pick up the slack for the shortcomings of the state and federal government, as this is a national crisis, not a localized issue.

There have been two things that largely worked towards South Texas's benefit. One was that the local authorities closed the beaches right before Spring Break occurred. Because of this, the vast majority of potential infections were limited as many affected up north stayed there instead of bring the virus here. While there still have been infections, the effects of Coronavirus here have been minimal compared to many other parts of the country because the local authorities acted real quick in the early days. Precautions were being taken before the first cases were being reported.

The second thing that helped South Texas was that this was one of the last places where the virus arrived. The full effects of the virus have already been felt in other places up north before it got here. Regardless though, the virus is spreading at a faster rate through community spread now. It will be a lot harder to contain the virus. Personally, I feel though that we haven't peaked yet.

What's troubling Greg Abbott, being the pathetic coward that he is, bowed to the will of a few selfish, feeble,  self-centered protester by making plans to open up establishments while the virus is still ravaging. The regulations have protected there loved ones. Instead of seeing that though, many are quick to declare "oppression" at the very measures that protected them. As a result, It's easy for the pitiful protesters to complain. Most of them believed that the deadly virus was a hoax anyway. The ungrateful  protesters would be singing a different tune if they lost there sons, daughters, mothers, or fathers to the virus. Things would be different if everybody around them died. Instead of seeing what was accomplished by the health regulations, these unappreciative protesters decided to make fools of themselves in the eyes of the world and those who lost loved ones in the outbreak. Pathetic. Simply pathetic.
Many golfers here in Texas are upset. They can't engage in there pleasure activity like the rest of us. If movies, swimming pools, libraries, and parks are closed, then why should golf courses get a pass and remain open. This petty grievance reeks of elitism.

They just want there course! What does several do when they can't hit there balls in there favorite sport (wait a minute, that doesn't sound right). Do what many would do in similar situations and pass off such trivial complaints as oppression! Declare that your freedoms as an American have been violated! Never mind that such a restriction had been put to protect the general public and reduce the spread of exposure. How dare the state and local government try to protect people during the health crisis!

Apparently, Texas's Attorney General Ken Paxton is more afraid of golfers than he is of Covid-19. Hell knows like fury like that of a Texas Golfer, not even Coronavirus apparently! This is the same Ken Paxton who stated that disaster exemptions for property taxes would not apply for the Coronavirus outbreak, despite Greg Abbott placing the state under a state of emergency. That sales tax money is more important than people's lives as Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick insinuated. Portfolios over people!

Greg Abbott was already reluctant in issuing the "not" stay-at-home order even though everybody knows that's what it is in the first place. Now, many in his own party are already complaining that it's too strict. They want it relaxed despite there being over 14,000 cases and over 300 deaths from the virus in this state.

He and people like him are more concerned about not stepping on toes and not offending people who will scream "rights" at the top of there lungs while the same people think that stopping the inconveniences imposed by the health crisis is more important than the sanctity of life itself!

Several proudly proclaimed that they went because the governors of there particular states didn't issue or enforce the stay-at-home order. These governors didn't order or enforce such orders because they don't want to be voted out of office, thus putting party politics over safety. These governors would rather serve there party and interest than that of the general public.

Several selfish protesters would go on and make false claims of oppression and loss of freedom as they pass off complaints as human rights violations. The demonstrations were not made up of those who had every right in the world to complain, like workers forced to work by massive corporations that pushed profits over people without providing the supplies necessary to keep clean. Amazon comes to mind. Those lacking in the demonstrations were small business owners that also had every right in the world to demand government aid.

Using horribly abused catch phrases and empty platitudes with no meaning, those demonstrators who showed proudly proclaimed that they were going to restore freedoms even though they always had it in the first place, and thus, there is nothing to restore. There going to take back the country even though there is nothing to take back as those in elected positions were put there by the will of the people.

If those who actually had every reason in the world to protest didn't come out, then who showed up to these demonstrations then? The fringes of those in the cracks came out. The demonstrations were mostly populated by crackpots that embrace conspiracy theorist and hail that vile con-man Alex Jones as a American hero and patriot. White supremacist and gun-totting extremist quickly populated there ranks. Those who believe in imaginary boogeymen and massive conspiracies behind every street sign were out in full force.

The protesters embraced the general attitude that Covid-19 is a phony hoax created to scare and control people. For the gullible fools that made up the crowds, life-saving vaccinations in the works become bio-engineered weapons produced by Bill Gates and the Rockefeller Foundation to mass murder millions as part of a population control scheme. The protesters  are not those who embrace logic and reason, but murder it in cold blood instead. The demonstrators are not individuals who formed opinions based on facts, but from rhetoric, prejudices, stereotypes, political biases,  sensationalist click-bait, and conspiracy theories. They are the ones who caved into there inner demons as there tin-foil hats and loaded guns are consumed by fear. Paranoia not based on reality becomes very real as these demonstrators see things not there. Cartoon villains and boogeymen consume them in a violent manner.

********** I'm not against wealth and corporations. I'm against wealth being used to manipulate the system while corporations place themselves above the law and accountability. It's wrong to punish people who are rich. At the same time, its wrong to grant reward, privilege, and impunity just because a company or person has wealth. Several of these corporations don't pay taxes at all, like Amazon. Several treat there employees not as the valuable asserts that they are, but disposable bodies of little value. I'm against corporations when they act outside the confines of law and ethics.
