Software Highlight of the Oldskool: Transylvania
A Cool, Oldskool Text Adventure To Get Into The Halloween Spirit!
As we get closer to
Halloween, this old classic popped into my mind. I've originally ran
across this game as a disk image for the Tandem emulator which emulated
the Tandy 1000 family of IBM Compatibles. This port of the game used the
Tandy-specific features of that computer compared to those found on the
standard IBM compatibles. The Tandem emulator has long been abandoned
to digital purgatory, but not this game though.
This game was developed by Antonio Antiochia and first released on the Apple II micro-computer on 1982. Transylvania is a text adventure where one rescues this princess named Sabrina in a wilderness populated by werewolf's, a goblin who's a practical prankster, along with vampires of the non-emo persuasion.
Since this game is a text adventure, the game can be played without any illustrations, with a text-only adventure in the pure sense, like the Infocom titles like the Zork series of games and the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy. Those illustrations, which adds depth to the game though, can be enabled by pressing Enter at the prompt. Like those games, one navigates through the wilderness by typing commands. Commands like "Go North", "Read note", "Grab bread", "Grab gun", etc.
As mentioned earlier, this game was originally released on the Apple II micro-computer, before being ported to various other systems like the Commodore 64 and Amiga, Macintosh, Atari ST, and the IBM-Compatibles. Most of the screenshots from the PC version are from the Tandy 1000-specific port of the game. The Tandy 1000 was a IBM Compatible PC that had enhanced CGA (Color Graphics Adapter) graphics. In my opinion, the Commodore Amiga port ofTransylvaniais visually the most impressive of the ports. The screenshot gallery shows the visual differences between the different ports.
Transylvaniais a awesome game that will get you into the Halloween mood. Enjoy, and avoid those menacing werewolfs and vampires!
